Simulation: beyond exploring challenges

Simulation can also be a technique to identify what works well, understanding why it worked, and translating the successes to other areas of teamwork or clinical practice in need. For example; a clinical area that had a great patient flow, used simulation to identify why this worked so well. Once identified the key factors where passed onto another outpatient clinic. With the suggestions applied they were also able to improve that patient flow. This shared experience and knowledge is what makes simulation such a useful and valued tool in healthcare education and continued training and practical application in the clinical field.

The healthcare community only stands to gain improved knowledge, skills, and attitudes, by using simulation-based learning for developing and experienced healthcare professionals, all while protecting patients from further unnecessary risks. At the end of the day simulation education is another tool in the fight to improve patient safety, and that is the biggest and most important benefit simulation can bring to healthcare.
