Behind every principle is a person

The Compassionate Care Principles developed by Metro North immediately resonated with us at CSDS. That’s because these seven principles aren’t just statements on a page — they represent real people and real experiences. And that’s what makes them powerful.

Metro North 7 Compassionate Care Principles

  • Flexible visiting hours across inpatient facilities
  • Care in the right setting according to patient wishes
  • Timely communication and reporting
  • Co-designed care
  • Good navigation and knowledge sharing
  • Patient-centred holistic care
  • True and adequate informed consent

At their heart, these principles promote inclusion and engagement with patients, families, and carers. They encourage health professionals to communicate clearly, collaborate meaningfully, and tailor care to individual needs, all of which lead to better patient experiences and outcomes.

At CSDS, we’re proud to support the Compassionate Care Principles by helping bring them to life. Whether through storytelling or simulation, we’re committed to helping healthcare teams understand what compassionate care looks and feels like in practice.

One of the contributions has been producing videos that highlight the person behind each principle. Through stories like Kyle’s and Francesca’s, we’ve listened, learned, and been moved. More videos will be released in the future.

By sharing these powerful stories, we hope to inspire deeper empathy, reflection, and action. Because behind every principle is a person.
